Hero’s Ale is a 3.9% smooth chestnut ale, in line with the colour and strength of beers from a century ago. Herefordshire-grown Fuggles and Goldings are in the recipe, both classic varieties that would have been around at that time and which complement each other well.
The Hero in question is the young man who features on the pump clip, Allan Leonard Lewis. This brave individual, a soldier in the First World War, is Herefordshire’s only county-born Victoria Cross recipient.
Swan Brewery was approached by the AL Lewis VC Memorial Fund to brew a special ale to raise awareness of and funds for the project to erect a life-size bronze statue of Allan Leonard Lewis in Hereford. For their part, Swan Brewery will be making a donation for every cask of Hero’s Ale sold, and offering publicans the chance to match the donation. There will be a free tasting day on Friday 2nd March at the brewery: any donations drinkers care to make will be given to the fund.
We’d recommend enjoying a pint of Hero’s Ale in pubs in locations of meaning in Allan’s life: The Rhydspence in Brilley, The Boat in Whitney on Wye or the Allan Leonard Lewis in Neath. The official launch will take place at The Rhydspence on 28th February.
