Swan Love is a 4% transatlantic pale ale, marrying together Citra hops from North America and Ernest hops from England. Citra hops are favoured in craft brewing for the lime, mango and tropical fruit hop character they bring to an ale. If Citra hops wear flip-flops, then Ernest hops definitely sport polished brogues. Ernest is named after its breeder, Prof Ernest Salmon, selected at Wye College, Kent in 1921. It was used in brewing trials in 1959 but reported as having “strong, coarse, American aroma”. These days we love the pineapple and citrus notes that Ernest brings to English ales and here they particularly complement the Citra characteristics.
Swan Love was first brewed to celebrate the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, another transatlantic pairing. We brew Swan Love for us commoners to toast each other around Valentine’s Day each year. When Swan Love was launched in May 2018, anyone turning up in a wedding dress or their wedding suit received a free 4 pinter of the new beer to take away.
It’s been a while since we brewed Swan Love since February 2020 was not a busy time in the brewery, but we hope to put that right in 2022.
