Hero’s Ale is a 3.9% smooth chestnut ale initially brewed to mark the centenary of the end of WW1. The style of the ale is in line with the colour and strength of beers from a century ago. Herefordshire grown Fuggles and Goldings are in the recipe, both classic varieties that would have been around at that time and which complement each other well. Hero’s Ale is rounded, with a hint of sweetness on the finish. The chestnut colour of the ale comes from grist featuring crystal and amber malts alongside the mainstay of Pale Maris Otter.
The Hero in question is the young man who features on the pump clip, Allan Leonard Lewis. This brave individual, a soldier in the First World War, is Herefordshire’s only county-born Victoria Cross recipient. In September 2018 a statue of Allan was erected in the centre of Hereford, as a result of the hard work of the AL Lewis VC Memorial Fund. We were delighted to do our bit in raising awareness and funds for this cause.
Herefordshire grown Fuggles and Goldings feature in other of our ales, but in no other recipe do they appear together.
